The United States Government has special relationships with some American Indian or Alaskan Native tribes, and they call them Federally recognized tribes.

These tribes have natural rights to govern themselves and are able to receive some benefits because of their connections with the U.S. Government.

Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution allows Congress to create partnerships with the tribes. Because of that, the tribes are a central part of our Nation’s history.
